Desert Nights- Aug 17

Aug 25 2011

Welcome to another week, fellow readers. We’d like to introduce you to another evening of our freshly served acoustic tunes served up by The Standard Hollywood this Wednesday evening. Here’s the intelligence report…

(Listen to Anny Celsy here)

Anny Celsi (pronounced “Chelsea”) began her musical upbringing in the shadow of the Portland freeways, infusing its rain-soaked, caffeine-rock culture with the girl-pop sounds of Phil Spector, Dusty Springfield and Ellie Greenwich. She spent her teenage years as a writer and vaudeville performer with the acclaimed avante-garde Storefront Theatre, after which, several inches short of the Las Vegas showgirl minimum, she turned her attention to songwriting. She was a founding member of the L.A. boy/girl pop-rock band The Tearjerkers. Anny’s next band, Annyland, released an independent CD, She Walks In. Their video of the title song became a staple with indie video programmers.

Opening the show, and joining Anny later for her set, is 18-year old songwriter Ivan Pyzow, of the band Hazel, in a rare solo performance. In his young career Ivan has already appeared at the House of Blues, the Troubador, the Hollywood Bowl, Disney Hall, Monterey Jazz Festival and the Duke Ellington Theater in New York. His songwriting has been compared to classic writers like Brian Wilson, Laura Nyro and Rufus Wainwright. This summer, Hazel is in the studio recording their first EP for Warner Records.

(Listen to Rich McCulley here)

“I, Rich McCulley am dedicated to playing REAL Rock & Roll Music!! My music is a blend of all the great stuff; blues, pop, country, punk, ect, the stuff that makes rock roll.” As a new decade begins, veteran roots rocker Rich McCulley is celebrating an anniversary of his own with the release of his fifth album, the 11 track Americana pop Starting All Over Again. The 10 busy years since his debut record in 2000 have included 3 additional critically acclaimed albums, hundreds of storied gigs from coast to coast, tens of thousands of touring miles, over a hundred published songs and co-writes, production credits on dozens of notable records, and numerous prominent film and television placements.

(Listen to Ivan Pyzow of Hazel)

Ivan Pyzow is a talented young singer-songwriter from Los Angeles. He is 1/4th of the up-coming band, Hazel, who are beginning to win the hearts and minds of fellow Angelinos. That’s pretty much all we have to say about Ivan. Come see him belt out a few tunes acoustic style.

What is Desert Nights?

Desert Nights is a weekly gathering at The Standard, Hollywood. Every Wednesday, we curate 3 musical acts on the rise to perform a special acoustic set in our hotel lounge. The vibe is warm and intimate, evoking an impromptu jam in a musician’s living room. Also, expect 2 clever cover songs delivered by each performer. The sets begins at 7:30 pm in the Cactus Lounge (thus the title of the evening, Desert Nights).
