André Saraiva on Le Bain, Le Baron, French Kissing + more

Sep 09 2011

Fashion week is here and Le Baron will pop up at Le Bain from tonight through the weekend. André Saraiva, who designed our nautical uniforms this summer, and his gang are bringing even more fun, freedom and happiness to the party. Please welcome the man himself: Monsieur A for a Standard Q&A!

You run Le Bain with The Standard and were instrumental in its name. Presumably this is a reference to Les Bains in Paris, which you know well. If you had to describe Les Bains from Paris to a New Yorker, what would be the pitch?

André (Balazs) and I had a late dinner one night and were talking about each of our memories of nights in Paris in the 80’s. I used to go sleep on a couch in the club when I couldn’t go home, and wait for the first metro. Le Bain should be like a second home here in New York.

What are your expectations for Le Bain this weekend?

Lots of smoking and French kissing.

What would make you really happy?

To see people happy!

It has been weeks, months and now more than a year that we’ve been anticipating the opening of Le Baron in New York. What is the scoop about it as of today?

We already opened and closed! You missed the party?

You have been named to be the new creative director of Fashion French magazine L’Officiel Hommes a few months ago. What was your approach to that new job?

I never thought I would do a magazine, and when they asked me to do it I was excited and put all the references of my favorite magazines: the old Esquires, the early Interviews, Playboy, and the French magazines PHOTO, Zoom and Facade. I filled the magazine with the people I love, and I hope you will like it!

What will make L’Officiel by André unique in the world of Fashion media?

We have used only real people, no models. Friends famous or not famous, and no studios, all real situations and stories.

What is your favorite new fashion designer today?

I really like what Guillaume Henry is doing with Carven.

What was the highlight of your summer so far?

Spending August with my daughter and my love Annabelle in the South of France.

If you would be able to travel in time and space to a party of the past, where would you go out?

Les bals surréalistes du Montparnasse with Man Ray, Picasso, Dali, Bunuel…
