We stopped by French artist and TED Prize Winner JR while he installed his Art Basel piece for tonight’s opening at Emmanuel Perrotin. Famous for his enormous public photo installations in Paris, Israel, Palestine, in the favelas in Brazil and most recently a few blocks from The Standard, East Village on Houston Street.
As part of our ongoing curiosity for what people can’t travel without, we asked him about his Secret Travel Item:
“Something I always travel with are really, really tiny stickers – they are like a centimeter by a centimeter – and it’s mainly eyes. I always have them with me in my pocket or luggage and when I get somewhere like the bathroom or the hotel closet, I always drop them in a place that you wouldn’t notice directly, you only notice it if something fell on the ground and you have to bend down to pick it up and suddenly you see little eyes. I don’t even sign my name.”
So next time you check-in, make sure to take a peek in the less obvious spots and hopefully JR left his mark.
