HamOm Music, Meditation and Mercy with Donna D'Cruz

Mar 15 2012

Hard to miss in her signature Swarovski-studded headphones, globetrotting DJ Donna D’Cruz has spun for the likes of Valentino, Naeem Khan, Donna Karan, and P. Diddy. Next week, however, she’ll show off her more ascetic side when she presents a special evening of music and meditation at The Standard Spa. Before she heads to the hamam, we asked the enchanting mix-mistress, and founder of the lifestyle brand Rasa Living, to enlighten us on a few things …

What made you decide to do an evening of music and meditation at The Standard?

The spa has a real commitment to transforming, uplifting, and inspiring people, and when I think of all my wonderful hammam experiences in Morocco, Istanbul, Amsterdam, and other cities I immediately hear music——music from various cultures and traditions that transports us, guides us, transforms us, heals us, elevates and inspires us. I was totally inspired to create a full sonic immersion combining music and guided meditation into one unforgettable experience.

You’re so beautiful! What’s your secret?

The secret to outer beauty is to love yourself. When we are peaceful, loving, creative, compassionate beings, we are magnets for like-minded souls.

How often do you meditate?

Every day. Meditation comes from the Latin word, “Meditario,” which means to contemplate. When you meditate, the awareness of your breath changes immediately and you become quieter, like an observer, the blessed “watcher.” For me, making the time to meditate daily is an act of love. When I invite this stillness, I invite divine presence. I transform myself and am ready to follow the path of my life’s true work.

Aside from meditation, what do you do to relax?

I read ancient texts, have discussions with like-minded beings, write, listen to music, and design. Part of my dharma is to change the world through music, and my art as a DJ is a great part of this. We are all made up of water, so there’s great power in the vibrational power of music to shift consciousness.

What brings you the most joy?

I am most joyous when I am creating, which is, thankfully, every waking moment. I live a blessed life. I believe we all have the power to ask for a life filled with love, beauty, sensuality, compassion, and thrills. Be clear in asking the Universe——she is most ready to grant you a favor.
