We’re excited that June is finally here!! Why, you ask? Well because we’re super duper stoked that The Sister Ruby Band has decided to grace us with a residency this month!! Yep, that’s right, the fantastically talented The Sister Ruby Band will be playing every Wednesday at The Standard, Hollywood’s Desert Nights for the entire month of June. The best part, it’s free!! What a perfect way to start the summer!

The Sister Ruby Band: The Sister Ruby Band is the psych-rock project of 22 year old Los Angeles based Johnny Ruby. After last year’s self-recorded EP “A Shot In The Dark”, The Sister Ruby Band is set to release their full-length debut album “In Cold Blood”. Featuring appearances from guest musicians such as The Black Market Band and the Sugarplum Fairies, this record oscillates between the gauzy sounds of British shoe gaze and West Coast psychedelia. According to Buzz Bands LA’s Kevin Bronson “Sister Ruby’s woozy wall of sound isn’t too far from the reverb-soaked shimmer of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and, when the guitars are turned down, that trio’s excellent excursion into Americana, “Howl.” The singer himself? Ruminative and world-weary, on two continents.”

Adam Masterson: Some people write songs because they’ve got a record company schedule to meet. Others write for the money. Some write because they want to be famous. And a few write songs because they have something to say that demands to be heard. Adam Masterson is firmly in the latter category. He doesn’t really know where his songs come from. He doesn’t know what makes him write them. All he knows is that he has to sing them “One Tale Too Many” is a debut album to restore your faith in the art of great songwriting. It is a pop album - in the way that Neil Finn once defined pop as “an appreciation of simple, elegant melodies over interesting chords”. But it’s also a timeless record. Adam stands in a tradition that unites songwriters who have followed their muse regardless of fad and fashion or the demand for hit singles. Songs that could be dropped down in any time or place and which would strike a deep and resonant chord. It seems extraordinary that a record as mature, natural and deeply romantic as “One Tale Too Many” can arrive as if out of nowhere.
Sotto: Sotto was born on a hot night in Atwater Village brought together by an earthquake and a barking dog. Like any good pediatrician recommends, Sotto focuses on simplicity and natural sound from the perspective of three songwriters and one percussion doctor melding into a furiously quiet unit.
What is Desert Nights?
Desert Nights is a weekly gathering at The Standard, Hollywood, hosted by KCRW’s DJ Valida. Every Wednesday, Valida curates three acoustic musical acts to perform a set in the Cactus Lounge. The vibe is warm and intimate, evoking an impromptu jam in a musician’s living room. The music begins at 7:30pm, it’s always free and always a good time. Guaranteed.
