Daniel Scheinert accepting his Vimeo award at the Penthouse of The Standard, East Village
The 2012 Vimeo Awards After Party took place last night at The Standard, East Village. The awards recognize 13 categories, ranging from animation to narrative to sports. If you’re keen to expose yourself to some seriously talented short filmmaking, we highly recommend watching them all here.
Grand Prize Winner, “Symmetry” by Everynone
But someone has to be the crowned The Best and “Symmetry” by Everynone definitely earned its Grand Prize award. The 2-minute-and-54-second film is a collection of split screens, each exemplifying an idea of symmetry. Yes, it’s intelligent, funny and quietly beautiful, but it’s the final frame – a new born baby juxtaposed with an old man flatlining in a hospital bed – that elevates the film from merely clever to, well, an arresting portrait of our brief, mortal existence.
Our personal runner up would have to be Mulberry’s, ‘Skirt’ which took home the Fashion category prize. Finally, a fashion film that isn’t just a bunch of models showcasing “an aspirational lifestyle,” but rather an elegant and artfully told love story told without words, only with things, and yes, even a skirt.
